Road traffic fatalities is a crisis across Michigan and the United States. In 2021, more than 1,130 people were killed on Michigan's roads and more than 42,900 people were killed in traffic crashes across the United States. Reduce serious injuries from 5,586 in 2018 to 4,994 in 2022.Įvery year traffic crashes on Michigan roads cause loss of life and billions of dollars in economic losses. The pavement project will improve and extend the life of the roadways the road diet project will improve the safety of the roads for all users.Reduce fatalities from 974 in 2018 to 945 in 2022. Once the pavement work is complete, the roadways will be restriped with bike lanes, improved crosswalks, improved bus stop markings, and additional on-street parking. MDOT will also be adding and updating many pedestrian crosswalk ramps, including on Michigan Avenue downtown. In areas paved with asphalt the existing asphalt will be milled off and replaced in areas paved with concrete damaged areas will be removed and re-poured. MDOT will be simultaneously constructing a pedestrian pathway over I-94 by converting the westernmost southbound lane of Huron to a shared-use path and also following YCUA’s work with a pavement maintenance and road diet project. A video of the presentation that was made at this session is available online here. A public presentation was held by YCUA regarding this project on Wednesday, February 23rd. This is being done both to remove older pipe materials in both systems and to improve the reliability of service. YCUA will be replacing and upgrading many of the underground water mains, including some of Ypsilanti’s oldest, most fragile pipes they will also be replacing some water service leads and taking this opportunity to replace some sanitary sewer as well. I-94 under the bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction. The ramp from SB Huron (Hamilton) to EB 94 will be closed. The ramp from NB Huron to WB 94 will be closed. One lane northbound and one lane southbound will remain open on Huron/Hamilton. There are nighttime closures planned beginning Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, 6/7, through Friday night/Saturday morning, 6/11, of lanes on I-94 as well as some of the on-ramps at Huron, from approximately 9PM to approximately 5AM.Nighttime closures are planned for I-94 and Huron Street the week of 6/6.I-94 under the bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction nightly during the week of 6/20.The ramp from SB Huron (Hamilton) to EB 94 will be closed through at least August.The ramp from NB Huron to WB 94 will be closed through at least August.One lane northbound and one lane southbound will remain open on Huron/Hamilton.Beginning next week and through at least August, the NB Huron to WB I-94 ramp and the SB Huron (Hamilton) to EB I-94 ramp will remain closed.
