![]() There are literally countless topics in this kind of column that I could cover with either a smile or a frown on my rather elderly face. All I can say with regard with buffalo is that any person desiring to approach one (or more) should instead head for the nearest bar and order some stiff adult beverages until the desire passes. But there are also many reports of people walking up to them and getting gored, or even killed, for their effort.īison are massive beasts, and they are as unpredictable as a bet on a roulette wheel. There are many reports of people walking up to one of these massive and petting it without incident. Stick to the Buffalo Billsīison, more often called buffalo in this country, are another enigma worth looking at. So yes, despite all the bad press, snakes do have the brainpower to strike with only a severe warning of sorts. It is keenly aware that it has a limited supply of the poison, and it will not waste that stuff needlessly. And the reason this situation happens is purely mercenary on the part of the reptile involved. ![]() There are actually near-countless examples of people bitten by venomous snakes that were not injected by the snake’s poison. If it injects its poison into a person, they will die before they can walk three steps. And in Africa a puff adder is called a “three stepper” snake. But after 10 minutes or so he looked as good (and stupid) as before the bite occurred. It was a tense five minutes, let me tell you. when he calmly stated that the hospital would not be necessary because, in five minutes or so, he would either be dead or as good as new. I obviously asked him what I should do for him, thinking hospital, ambulance, etc. I rushed to aid him but he held up his hand, then walked over to a nearby chair and sat down. One man who had a large collection of deadly poisonous snakes from tropical regions around the world was bitten by a puff adder while I was there to inspect his collection. ![]() Yes, such an attack is not only possible, it has happened countless times. Is it true that some venomous snakes might “strike” a person but not “inject” poison into that victim? But when something sets off their aggression, then stand back and give them room because they are going to unwind and you do not want to be too near when they do. They share a live-and-let-live mentality as long as there is no need to be aggressive. Most animals, including large predators, are rarely aggressive while in their preferred surroundings. Its mind was probably centered on that stream and how many salmon it would catch. It may not have even known its companions were humans if the wind was right.Īnd it probably did not care care if there were humans a few feet away. It was at peace with the entire ecosystem it calls home. The bruin in question probably had a reasonably full belly and had also probably had just finished a nice, peaceful nap. Every bear on that stream knows there are plenty of salmon to go around. They might huff and puff while in the middle of a salmon stream if another bear encroaches on their chosen fishing spot, but actual fights are rare. Grizzly bears, regardless of size, probably spend the large majority of their waking hours in a non-aggressive manor. Why did that bear not attack the two men?Īnd the obvious answer is also the most likely answer. Which brings up the most important question surrounding this incident. The two men both let out a sigh of (big time) relief after that encounter, and they picked up their stuff and headed back to their camper. It appeared to be less than 10 feet from the closest man.Īfter roughly five minutes the bear got up and walked on down to the river to catch dinner. They were enjoying the view when a big (very big) brown bear came up from behind them and sat down on its haunches beside them. It seems that two men were salmon fishing on an Alaskan river when the influx of brown bears (grizzles) forced them off the river and onto a bluff where they set up some chairs and a video camera to film the scene below. The next “tall tale” has a video tape to back it up.
